Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls, Dark Souls 2, Bloodborne, and Dark Souls 3: All games directed or co-directed by From Software president Hidetaka Miyazaki. For many of you, Dark Souls 3 was (or still is) your first foray into the brutal and beautiful Souls universe. I’ve been fortunate enough to play every one of these guys except for Demon’s Souls, and for me that’s a problem. I’m somewhat of a completionist, and when a series or franchise is important to me I like to familiarize myself with every entry as to fully appreciate the evolution and scope of the series as a whole.
This is why I, like so many others, am hoping for an eventual Demon’s Souls remaster. The Souls games didn’t really take off until Dark Souls 2, mainly because people like me who played Dark Souls wouldn’t shut up about how awesome it was. I don’t have a PS3 laying around, so I feel like a remaster is the only way I’ll ever get to experience the genesis of this massively important franchise for myself. Some recent interviews with Miyazaki seemed to give the impression that he and From Software had no interest in giving Demon’s Souls the remaster treatment, but that isn’t the case. As it turns out, the ball is in Sony’s court in that regard. Here’s an excerpt from a more recent interview (via Gamespot):
“It seems like there was a misunderstanding in a previous interview in relation to a remake or a remastering of the game, so let me reiterate here. The Dark Souls series is Bandai Namco Entertainment’s IP, and Demon’s Souls and Bloodborne is Sony Interactive Entertainment’s IP. Hence, the decision to do a remake or remastering is under their jurisdiction. For me and for From Software, I don’t think we’ll be involved with their happening, but it could happen through another developer.”
While it may sound strange to hear that From Software wouldn’t have anything to do with a Demon’s Souls remaster, it’s not uncommon. Just look at Modern Warfare Remastered: that’s a huge game with massive appeal, and that remaster isn’t being handled by Infinity Ward. Though Infinity Ward is “overseeing” the project, it’s actually being worked on by Raven Software. Needless to say, we’ll take a Demon’s Souls remaster however we can get it, but it sure would be nice to see it on PS4 and PC with some robust new online features. We’ll keep our bony, hallow fingers crossed.
