Hideo Kojima says the Switch is an expansion on his game’s feature

“This is the gamer’s dream.”

Metal Gear and Death Stranding creator Hideo Kojima has shared his thoughts on Nintendo’s upcoming console, the Switch.

In an interview with IGN at RTX Sydney, Kojima praised the hybrid nature of the Switch–that you can start a game at home and then take it with you portably. He mentioned this was an extension of a feature he used in one of his games.

Metal Gear Solid allowed players to transfer save data from their PS3 their PS Vita, thus taking a home console game on the go. This feature was called “Transfarring.”

“I believe [the Switch] is an extension of that idea,” Kojima said to IGN. “The fact you can play something at home and take it outside, this is the gamer’s dream. The Switch is an evolution of that.”

“For example, often when you buy a Blu-Ray disc,” he added, “it’ll have a code on the inside for a digital version, so in the same respect you can watch it at home and then take it on the go on your tablet and smartphone. This is how movies and TV are moving, and this is how games should go.”

Kojima also stated the Switch is a “predecessor” to every game being playable on every device.

“I feel like cloud technology is what everything will eventually move to,” he said. “When the infrastructure is ready, you’ll be able to play everything, on every device, anywhere. The Switch is the predecessor to this step.”

Hideo Kojima is currently working on the mysterious Death Stranding game, set to release at some unknown point in the future exclusively on PS4.

The Nintendo Switch hits shelves on March 3rd. Have you secured a preorder yet?

Mischa McGill

Mischa grew up with video games and still has a deep love for many - especially fun, colorful RPGs. Some of her favorites include Pokémon, Animal Crossing, Pikmin, Fantasy Life, Kingdom Hearts, Skyrim, Civilization V, and Stardew Valley. She loves nights in with her boyfriend cooking Mexican food, watching Studio Ghibli movies, and going head-to-head in their favorite games. Mischa might not beat you in Super Smash Bros, but she owns a replica of Arwen’s sword and Hermione’s wand, so... don’t rub it in too much.
