The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening is being remade for the Nintendo Switch, and will launch some time later this year. The remake of this beloved Game Boy classic, which first launched decades ago, was revealed during a special Nintendo Direct presentation. Here’s the elevator pitch from this afternoon’s press release:
“Originally released for the Game Boy system more than 25 years ago, one of the most beloved games in the Legend of Zelda series returns. In this modern re-imagining, players travel to the mysterious island of Koholint to guide Link on a perilous adventure. The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening arrives exclusively on Nintendo Switch in 2019.”

The Legend of Zelda fans have been sharply divided on Link’s Awakning‘s visual style. The game boasts a highly polished, chibi aesthetic that some find repulsive. I for one think that it looks gorgeous. The depth of field is a little aggressive in the corners of the screen, but everything else about the presentation makes me feel like I’m looking down into a living toy box. I love the smooth, rounded geometry and shiny surfaces. Link’s Awakening reminds me of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker‘s presentation in a few ways, and that’s a good thing.
