Miyamoto talks about Nintendo/Universal Studios partnership in new video

Nintendo and Universal want potential customers to:

“Imagine the fun of stepping into a larger-than-life Nintendo adventure. Gigantic Piranha Plants spring to life. Question blocks, power-ups and more surround you. And Mario and all his friends are there to pull you into a brand-new world.”

That’s right, Nintendo is not only joining the new-fangled mobile gaming market, but also cashing in on what Disney’s been doing since 1955. After all these years of the Wii-verse telling gamers to go outside, Nintendo has finally decided to profit off it (very fun to say ‘profit-off-it’).

  • Nintendo-themed areas are coming to Universal Studios Japan, Universal Orlando Resort and Universal Studios Hollywood.
  • These will be expansive, immersive and interactive. They will be highly themed and authentic environments filled with multiple attractions, shops and restaurants.
  • Guests will feel as if they are playing inside their favorite games – this time in real life.        <—- hilarious
  • There will be something for everyone – regardless of their age or gaming experience level.
  • Planning and creative work on these areas is well underway; they will open separately over the next several years.

I bolded that last line just in case you were about to buy a ticket for a vacation with Mario. Nintendo previously mentioned their Universal Studios plans for Osaka would be ready in time for Japan to host the Olympics in 2020, so we’re still quite a ways off.

Osaka already has a Kirby-themed Cafe, offering food, music, and plenty of memorabilia for your consumer pleasure.

Kirby’s your friend! “With benefits”….and you’re eating him

I’ll predict this should be a massively profitable venture for the company, as millions of gamers raised on Mario and Link can now bring their families to be indoctrinated into the cult of N. This is yet another reason that a company founded over 100 years ago will have no problem remaining profitable no matter how bad some of their consoles tank. Sorry Microsoft, you won’t be buying Mario anytime soon.

Mathew is a huge fan of Space, Strategy, and Shadowrun (Genesis version is #1). When it comes to games and films, he’d much rather experience a 10/10 classic from yesteryear than a 6/10 modern blandfest. He does feel we’re living in a gaming golden age with the power of indie developers at an all-time high, but wishes AAA publishers would take more risks. Mat believes it’s only a matter of time before the pendulum swings the other way and new ideas take their rightful place above reboots.
