No New Game Modes for Rainbow Six Siege, Says Dev

Don’t worry, you can still expect new maps and operators.

Breaking from action game norm, Rainbow Six Siege developer Ubisoft has confirmed the game will not get new game modes in any future updates.

Adding and mixing up game modes via update is a staple in modern video games. OverwatchDestinyGrand Theft Auto VTitanfall 2, and many other games are seemingly constantly rolling out updates that tweak existing game modes or add entirely new ones. Uncharted 4 actually just got a Hardcore difficulty added to its Survival Mode, in case you missed it.

Ubisoft’s choice to limit game modes on Siege will upset those players who incessantly desire new ways to play, but a couple of the game’s directors think it’s the best strategy for this game. According to them, altering Siege in such a way would risk ruining the heart of its gameplay.

In an interview with PC Gamer, creative director Xavier Marquis said adding new game modes is “something that we do not want to do.”

Brand director Alexandre Remy added, “There are some foundations to Siege that we want to keep: attack versus defense, destruction, operators, and [only having] one life. That is the DNA of the game, so when you look at what game modes would sufficiently refresh the experience but remain faithful to those rules, there’s not that many. Siege is its own game mode.”

Remy admitted devs originally planned to introduce more game modes to Rainbow Six Siege, but they “realized there’s so much depth with operators and destruction. That has a lot to offer, so the focus is always going to be on refreshing the meta with operators and new maps.”

The approaching Velvet Shell update will add two new operators–Mira and Jackal–and a new map called Coastline. You can read more details and watch the exciting trailer here.

What do you think about Rainbow Six Siege keeping only the one game mode? Will it limit the experience? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Mischa grew up with video games and still has a deep love for many - especially fun, colorful RPGs. Some of her favorites include Pokémon, Animal Crossing, Pikmin, Fantasy Life, Kingdom Hearts, Skyrim, Civilization V, and Stardew Valley. She loves nights in with her boyfriend cooking Mexican food, watching Studio Ghibli movies, and going head-to-head in their favorite games. Mischa might not beat you in Super Smash Bros, but she owns a replica of Arwen’s sword and Hermione’s wand, so... don’t rub it in too much.
