PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is adding new cosmetic crates and microtransactions

July’s monthly update for PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is coming a little late, but it has some exciting content to offer. The Early Access online survival shooter is adding first-person servers, three cosmetic crates, and a key purchase for the first time.

Due to a client crash bug, PUBG’s July update will be launching next week on August 3rd. Before that, players will get a smaller weekly patch with some bug fixes. Check out the Week 18 patch notes below.

  • Fixed a bug where characters got stuck in doors after partially destroying them
  • Fixed a bug causing the door Interaction UI to appear even after doors were completely destroyed
  • You can now use consumables while browsing the inventory during a reload
  • Fixed a bug where characters could not pick up items while running despite seeing the looting animation
  • Fixed a bug where characters would shake in spectator mode while running

With the August 3rd update, players will see dedicated first-person servers, along with an FOV slider for the new view mode. Devs also teased a new rifle but did not give any more details on the new weapon.

Three new cosmetic crates will also come with the update, and every item is inspired by the Battle Royale movie. The Wanderer Crate and Survivor Crate will be unlocked with battle points like other in-game crates, but the Gamescom Invitational Crate will cost you a bit.

Bluehole is using their Gamescom esports tournament to test out a key purchasing system for crates — think Rocket League or Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. Players will pay $2.50 for the crate key, which will unlock a plethora of themed clothing and other cosmetic items. The money will go towards funding the Gamescom tournament, as well as some charitable donations.

The team behind PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds never ceases to amaze me with their dedication to the community and actually doing Early Access right. They could have gotten some flak for adding a microtransaction at this point, but who can criticize giving the profits to charities and tournament winners?

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is available via Steam Early Access with a full launch expected later this year.

Mischa grew up with video games and still has a deep love for many - especially fun, colorful RPGs. Some of her favorites include Pokémon, Animal Crossing, Pikmin, Fantasy Life, Kingdom Hearts, Skyrim, Civilization V, and Stardew Valley. She loves nights in with her boyfriend cooking Mexican food, watching Studio Ghibli movies, and going head-to-head in their favorite games. Mischa might not beat you in Super Smash Bros, but she owns a replica of Arwen’s sword and Hermione’s wand, so... don’t rub it in too much.
