Runescape is Coming to Mobile with Cross-Platform Play

Your old massively multiplayer online role-playing game obsession is coming to your smartphone, studio Jagex told the world today. RuneScape and Old School RuneScape will be available to play on both PC and mobile devices soon.

Both free-to-play versions of the game will feature mobile-optimised interfaces and seamless cross-platform play between mobile and PC. That means you can start your game on your desktop and pick up where you left off on your smartphone. And vice versa. Or you can choose to play entirely on mobile. It’s your call.

“The RuneScape titles will become the first mainstream and established Western MMORPGs on mobile in full, and the first to deliver interoperable play between PC and mobile platforms,” said Jagex’s COO Phil Mansell. “We believe in taking our games to wherever our players want them; recent player surveys showed an overwhelming 90% of active players and 64% of former players telling us of their very high intent to play on mobile.”

RuneScape debuted as a browser-based MMORPG in 2001 and has since attracted over 250 million registered players. Old School RuneScape is simply the original game — basic combat, less microtransactions, and those nostalgic graphics and gameplay. It’s less demanding on devices, and it still receives updates. Give it a chance before trying out the updated RunScape, which features more quests, faster leveling, engaging combat, and modern graphics. It’s more up-to-date, but you’ll find a larger PvP community in Old School.

The classic version of this fan-favorite, Old School RuneScape, will launch this winter, with the modern RuneScape following sometime in 2018. Though the games won’t be available publicly for a while, you can register to get in on the closed betas now.

Are you a current RuneScape-er who plans to try out the new mobile versions? Or are you a retired player who might pick the MMO back up on mobile? Let us know in the comments below.

Mischa grew up with video games and still has a deep love for many - especially fun, colorful RPGs. Some of her favorites include Pokémon, Animal Crossing, Pikmin, Fantasy Life, Kingdom Hearts, Skyrim, Civilization V, and Stardew Valley. She loves nights in with her boyfriend cooking Mexican food, watching Studio Ghibli movies, and going head-to-head in their favorite games. Mischa might not beat you in Super Smash Bros, but she owns a replica of Arwen’s sword and Hermione’s wand, so... don’t rub it in too much.
