SGDQ 2020

The Best Speedruns of SGDQ 2020 Day Six

For six days now, the Summer Games Done Quick 2020 marathon has been streaming exciting speedruns on Twitch all in the name of charity. Entering its penultimate day, spirits were high and the anticipation was tangible. Many of the biggest and most popular speedruns are saved for the final days of the marathon, so day six of SGDQ 2020 was exceptionally packed to the gills. There were a bunch of speedrun races, a great mixture of genres, and some truly classic runs on display. Whether you’re a fan of first-person shooters, indie puzzle games, or all-time great games like Super Mario Bros, there was a run at SGDQ 2020 day six for you. In case you don’t have a full 24 hours to watch every run from SGDQ 2020 day six, we’ve made a list of recommendations for you to check out.

If you want to watch any of the speedruns listed below, you can watch replays on both the Games Done Quick Twitch channel and YouTube channel. The runs mentioned in this article are judged purely on the author’s personal taste alone, so we suggest checking out the full SGDQ 2020 schedule to see everything that was run. We weren’t able to watch every single run, so there’s a good chance we missed a few gems. That said, if you’re simply looking for a list of fantastic speedruns that will get you hyped up and eager to play some games, here are our picks for the best speedruns of SGDQ 2020 day six!

The Best Speedruns of SGDQ 2020 Day Six

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Any%) by Klooger

SGDQ 2020 day six kicked off with an excellent run of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 by Klooger, packed with action, precision shooting, and plenty of strafe-jumping. Although classic FPS games like DOOM and Quake often see more speedruns than more modern games, this run shows that series like Call of Duty definitely have merit within the community. By utilizing some bits of movement with impeccable accuracy, Klooger took down the terrorist threat time and time again, clearing enemy encounters and traversing levels with ease. If you’re a fan of other twitchy shooters like Titanfall, check out this speedrun.

Terminator: Skynet (Any%) by TBCR

Marathons are a unique setting for speedruns. In many instances, if you take an unintended death or the game completely crashes during a speedrun attempt, you’d like reset and move on. Unfortunately, with live marathons, the show must go on. That was the theme of this Terminator: Skynet run, executed by the witty and often-frustrated speedrunner TBCR. As he dealt with the game’s various flaws, he riffed on developer Bethesda’s problems, attempting to keep the run entertaining and funny. If you’re looking for a flawless speedrun that brushes the world record, this is not it. Instead, TBCR’s run feels like an extension of day five’s “Silly Games Done Quick” block.

Quest for Glory I: So You Want to Be a Hero (100%, Thief Route) by davidtki

Like horror games, point ‘n click adventures rarely get their due time in the spotlight, especially in Games Done Quick marathons. Luckily, SGDQ 2020 day five was blessed with a “100%” run of Quest for Glory I, ran by the lighthearted and fun-loving davidtki. Like his Shovel Knight: King of Cards run from SGDQ 2020 day one, this speedrun was packed with unique gameplay, retro visuals, and heartwarming family fun. In addition to his 100% run, davidtki also completed a bonus “Any%” run, clocking in under 2 minutes! If you like point ‘n click adventure games, take the time to check out this speedrun.

Baba Is You (True Ending) by Punchy

Baba Is You is an incredibly unique puzzle game that sees you controlling a small, pixelated character named Baba. The concept is very hard to explain, but you’re able to change the rules of the game by pushing around various word blocks, changing your character and altering the win-conditions of the game. Simply put, solving Baba‘s puzzles require a lot of out-of-the-box thinking, world-play, and strategy. Speedrunner Punchy expertly demonstrated all of those skills with impressive speed, clicking away at the speed of sound. Many puzzles were solved in mere seconds, barely giving the viewer time to comprehend the challenge at hand. Luckily, Punchy is a runner who is well-known for his gleeful energy and calculated commentary, always keeping the viewer engaged and informed. This is easily one of the best speedruns of the entire SGDQ 2020 marathon, so be sure to check it out.

Final time: 22:39

Super Monkey Ball 2 (Story Mode All Levels) by PetresInc

Speedruns of Super Monkey Ball games are arguably some of the speediest available, even when compared to the likes of Sonic the Hedgehog. If you’ve never played this addictive Gamecube classic, the concept is simple. You guide your monkey (in a ball) through obstacle courses, attempting to reach the goal at the end. Stages start out easy and straightforward, but soon become absolute death-traps, littered with incredibly punishing hazards and ultra-tough level layouts. Runner PetresInc showed off their inhuman speed and reaction time by blazing through every level in just over 30 minutes. PetresInc used buffered, frame-perfect strategies to send himself flying across plenty of stages, resulting in some extremely tense moments. Check out this speedrun if you’re looking to amplify your heart rate.

Super Mario Bros (Warpless Race) by SuperSonic71087, Kosmic, and GTAce99

There were a handful of races on day six of SGDQ 2020, but this 3-way “Warpless” race of the original Super Mario Bros stands out as one of the absolute best. The race featured three of the best Super Mario Bros speedrunners in the world, so I expected some high-skill gameplay. Those expectations were far surpassed. All three runners had absolutely fantastic runs, mostly void of any major mistakes. The small mistakes that did happen were rare enough to cause dramatic lead changes, providing quite a few gasp-worthy moments. Even then, all three runners were always within a few seconds of each other, occasionally syncing their gameplay for entire levels at a time. Plus, a few stylish and risky techniques were taken despite the immense competition, resulting in a handful of really cool tricks. Not only was this SGDQ 2020 speedrun race incredibly exciting to watch, but it’s simply one of the best demonstrations of Super Mario Bros skill that you’ll ever see.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (All Dog Treasures) by Limcube

This excellent speedrun of Breath of the Wild by Limcube provides two great things, glitches and dogs. It’s important to note the category of this speedrun, “All Dog Treasures”, which requires the runner to gain all 16 treasures that are gifted by helping out various dogs around Hyrule. Although it might sound less challenging than a standard playthrough of the main game, this feat requires some substantial amount of glitches, including huge bullet-time-bounces that sent Limcube flying across the map. In addition to all the fun gameplay, there’s also a significant amount of doggies, making this one of the most wholesome runs of SGDQ 2020.

Final time: 1:28:15

Crypt of the NecroDancer: AMPLIFIED (Coda All Zones) by SpootyBiscuit

SpootyBiscuit is one of the most accurate, locked-in speedrunners I’ve ever seen, further evidenced by this amazing run of the ultra-challenging rhythm/roguelike/dungeon crawler, Crypt of the NecroDancer. Although the game is tough enough as is, SpootyBiscuit chose to play ramp things up to near-impossible levels of difficulty by playing as Coda, the most punishing character of the game. While playing as Coda, the player cannot make a single mistake otherwise the entire run is over. You can’t take a hit, you can’t miss a key-press (which is at double-speed, by the way), and you can’t even collect money to buy items. Watching SpootyBiscuit absolutely blaze through this run in less than 15 minutes was impressive to say the least.

Final time: 14:53

By the end of the penultimate day of SGDQ 2020, the donation total raised to over $1,000,000. That’s an impressive chunk of change raised for Doctors Without Borders, but it’s definitely not the final total. With another full day of speedruns left, there’s no way of knowing just how high that number will climb. In previous years, we’ve seen an incredible amount of donations roll in over the final hours, so there’s still a big possibility of reaching 2 million. If you want to help contribute, you can donate at the Games Done Quick website.

Those are our picks for the best speedruns of SGDQ 2020 day six! There’s one final day of speedrunning left, so be prepared for another list of speedruns yet to come. As usual, we’ll be reacting live on Twitter (@official90skid), so stop by and join in the discussion. We would also love to have you join our Discord and hang out. We’re super excited for the final day of SGDQ 2020 and hope you enjoy the end of the marathon!
