Xbox One Tops Online Sales on Black Friday, PS4 Claims Cyber Monday

We are deep into the holiday season now with the biggest shopping weekend in the United States coming to a close. Many stores started their Black Friday sales on Thanksgiving night, and a lot of those sales extended through the weekend to Cyber Monday. And, of course, people were buying video games.

According to a new Adobe report, Microsoft’s Xbox One outperformed Sony’s PlayStation 4 in online sales on Black Friday. The Xbox One was one of the top five electronics sold online, along with iPads, Samsung 4K TVs, Macbook Airs, LG TV’s. These numbers followed the trend of high sales the Xbox One has been having the past few months.

I’d say PS4’s lackluster Black Friday numbers were due to their more complicated console system. The PS4 Pro released recently, and there weren’t any deals for it on Friday. Sure, the PS4 had a number of good bundles and deals, but it’s just not the newest console. Had the Pro been given some better deals for Black Friday, I’m sure Sony’s numbers would have been neck-and-neck to Microsoft’s.

However, the PS4 bounced back with its own sales victory on Cyber Monday, outselling all other electronics. That’s impressive considering how large the electronics category is. Mentioned in both the Adobe report and I4U, the PS4 is still the best selling console for November, beating the Xbox One for the first time in months.

As for Nintendo, 3DS sales were not mentioned in the Adobe report. (And the Wii U definitely wasn’t hitting any reportable numbers, let’s be real.) The report did mention that the Mini NES console and 3DS XL Solgaleo LunalaBlack Edition were two items likely to sell out. Also, Pokémon Sun and Moon were the highest selling games, followed by Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare.

Also according to I4U, Cyber Monday was the biggest online sales day in history. Consumers spent a whopping $3.39 billion, a 10.2% increase from last year. And Monday only beat Black Friday’s online numbers by $150 million. People reaaally like getting those holiday sales while sitting on their couches in their PJ’s.

Did you get any good deals on Black Friday or Cyber Monday? Did you protest consumer culture and all that it stands for? Let us know in the comments below!

Mischa grew up with video games and still has a deep love for many - especially fun, colorful RPGs. Some of her favorites include Pokémon, Animal Crossing, Pikmin, Fantasy Life, Kingdom Hearts, Skyrim, Civilization V, and Stardew Valley. She loves nights in with her boyfriend cooking Mexican food, watching Studio Ghibli movies, and going head-to-head in their favorite games. Mischa might not beat you in Super Smash Bros, but she owns a replica of Arwen’s sword and Hermione’s wand, so... don’t rub it in too much.
